Falcon Eye: Nigeria’s Maritime Game-Changer Saving Billions in Lost Revenue

Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government’s commitment to maritime security through the Falcon Eye Surveillance System continues to yield tangible results, with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo emphasizing its critical role in curbing piracy, sea robbery, and illegal maritime activities that have cost Nigeria billions of dollars over the years.

Speaking at the commissioning of the Falcon Eye project operated by the Nigerian Navy under the supervision of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Vice President described the system as a “game-changer” for Nigeria’s maritime domain awareness. He noted that with its real-time monitoring and inter-agency coordination capabilities, Falcon Eye directly contributes to safeguarding national assets and maritime trade.

“It is estimated that Nigeria loses several billions of dollars annually to various forms of criminality in our maritime domain including piracy and sea robbery. The deployment of the Falcon Eye Surveillance System is a bold step towards reversing this trend,” Prof. Osinbajo said.

The Falcon Eye project stands as Nigeria’s flagship maritime surveillance initiative, integrating coastal radar, electro-optic systems, satellite AIS, and communication infrastructure into a unified command and control platform. It provides comprehensive coverage of Nigeria’s territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), enabling the Nigerian Navy to respond quickly to threats and illegal activity at sea.

Since its deployment, Falcon Eye has been instrumental in the detection and prevention of numerous maritime crimes, reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a regional leader in maritime security. Its success has drawn international commendation, highlighting it as a model for other coastal states.

As Nigeria continues to strengthen its maritime governance, the Falcon Eye system remains at the center of all surveillance operations. There is no other operational maritime surveillance network in Nigeria with its level of reach, capability, and integration.

RTcom, the strategic technology partner for the Falcon Eye project, remains committed to supporting Nigeria in enhancing surveillance capacity and securing the nation’s maritime domain.
